Here's what a pilot said about our high specification Traffic Wands :-
The first test was battery life, I put in three new Duracell AA batteries, turned it on to flashing mode on tuesday morning and placed it on the balcony. Although it faded by the second day in sunlight at night could still be seen for 300m and possibly further but buildings only allowed me to view to that range. The traffic baton was still flashing seven day's later when I needed to replace the batteries for a job.
Second test was the drop test, during the batons time on my first floor balcony I knocked it off by accident, it just kept on flashing, no damage as far as I could see.
Third test was the water test, put under water for two minutes, kept on flashing and did not let any water in to battery compartment.
Forth test was the night helicopter landing site, the baton was put out four hours earlier with fresh batteries, first was at what distance and altitude could it be positively identified, 1000ft and 2nm. Next I flew directly over it and did not lose sight of it from any angle, then from 1000ft and 2nm made an approach, proved no problem and the flashing mode did not disorientate, even in the hover.
For the use I intend, it work's very well, put out batons in NATO 'T' in the morning, turn on and use for approach at night, pick up go home. Small enough to carry around, good battery life, tough and waterproof. If you would like to market them as helipad lights, green is the new colour.
The baton has also been used as a obstacle light for the meteorological mast just off the runway at my local airfield for the last week when the bulb failed in it's own obstacle light.
